Dreams typically recur because the dreamer is trying to process deep emotional fixations, traumas, and/or memories that the psyche has not been able to successfully integrate into the whole person.

The psyche desires completion, balance, and harmony, and when these are not met dreams are a very useful tactic that the psyche uses to balance and process emotional content.This is usually accomplished in non-serial, non-recurring dreams. However, the psyche may find particular fixation on a specific aspect of the emotions, and represent that repeatedly in the dreamwork.

Therefore, the way one stops recurring dreams or nightmares is by working through and processing the emotional trauma that the dream is representing. Indeed, therapists who rely on dreams often use the cessation of recurring dreams as signs of progress towards self-knowledge and whole psychical integration.
